previously visited RUGGER JERSEY SPINE Random Case
Authored By: Chris S, Resident, Newark Beth Israel, New Jersey, USA.
Patient: 45 year old
History: Pt with chronic renal failure.

Fig. 2: MR, proton density image

Findings: Increased density in the upper and lower zones of the vertebral body in a striated appearance.
Diagnosis: Rugger jersey spine in renal osteodystrophy.
Discussion:

The vertebral bodies have the classic "rugger jersey spine" with diffuse bands of osteosclerosis alternating with normal bone in the vertebral bodies. The striped appearance is termed "rugger jersey spine" due to its resemblance to the old striped rugby jerseys. This appearance may be seen in patients with renal osteodystrophy, or it may occur in the healing stage of osteitis fibrosa cystica. Although the rugger-jersey spine is relatively specific for hyperparathyroidism, a similar appearance may be seen in vertebrae in Pagets disease (picture frame vertebral body) and osteopetrosis (sandwich vertebral body).
